silver gelatin print, printed 1927
7 15/16 x 5 15/16 in.

  • Provenance: Collection of Virginia Best Adams
From the Collection of Anne Adams Helms
  • Notes:

The five Ansel Adams prints in this auction are from the collection of Ansel Adams’s daughter, Anne Adams Helms (1935-2021). It was Adams’s practice to set aside the most brilliant prints for his family and the group here demonstrates the technical mastery and sheer beauty of his photographs.

In 1927, Ansel Adams met the San Francisco art patron, Albert Bender and showed Bender a sample portfolio. Bender immediately ordered 50 copies of the portfolio to give to friends and other art patrons, fortifying Adams’s career as the leading photographer of the 20th century. Steeped in nature, the photographs are printed on a very thin and beautiful Kodak Vitava Athena Grade T Parchment paper. In these prints Adams displayed his mastery of the subject, of the grand and abstract landscape, emphasizing dark rich black tones and pure white tones. These 1927 masterpieces cemented Adams’s youthful work as the basic building blocks of American landscape photography.

This silver gelatin print on Kodak Vitava Athena paper is signed in pencil beneath the image with typeset title sheet recto. This print was made in 1927 for the Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras portfolio in a projected edition of 150, of which it is thought that no more than 75 copies were ever delivered to clients. Accompanied by the original folder with typeset title. Originally in the collection of Virginia Best Adams, whose inventory number is written in pencil on the accompanying folder.

  • Condition: This single-weight silver gelatin print is in overall excellent condition with no visible defects.
